BARNETT--Dr. Marjorie C., a leading Chicago psychoanalyst, patron of the arts, passed away peacefully on April 2 at her home in Lincoln Park, Chicago surrounded by her friends and family. She was 78 years old. Dr. Barnett loved her children, loved music, loved art, loved her profession, loved her patients, loved good food and fine wine, loved good literature, loved tennis, loved skiing and running, loved and was loved by her friends she truly loved and embraced life.
Dr. Barnett founded the A.N. and Pearl G. Barnett Family Foundation in 1989 to underwrite research in medicine and psychoanalysis.
For many years, she supported clinical research in Hematology.
Since1997, the Foundation has sponsored an annual competition for young talented musicians. Each year a different instrument was featured, the young competitors played a selection of classical repertoire.
Under her direction, The Foundation commissioned works by young composers to be learned and performed by all contestants.
Most recently, she funded the Israeli String Quartet that was suggested to her by her friend, Itzhak Perlman, who has admitted her into his Perlman Music Program.
She hosted eagerly anticipated evenings for the competitions, and concert soirees featuring the finest professional musicians reminiscent of the grand salons of 19th century Europe. The invitees came from all walks of life, the established, working folk, musicians, students, photographers, career professionals, artists - anyone who shared Dr. Barnett's interest in music, art, and stimulating conversation. She thrived on lively conversation, analysis, art, music and fine food. Often the chef de cuisine was a famous local chef- and more recently her brilliant chef son-Douglas.
Dr. Barnett was born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Stanford University at the young age of 16, and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was the first woman to attend and to graduate from the Chicago Medical School. After receiving her medical degree, she completed her internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital, and a residency in Psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital. She continued her studies at the Institute for Psychoanalysis in Chicago, graduating in both the core analytic and child analytic programs, and later served on the faculty.
She also served on the faculty of the University of Chicago, authored several seminal articles on psychoanalytic theory published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the Annual of Psychoanalysis.
Well-known as a person of wide ranging interests and remarkable intensity and ability, she was exceptionally dedicated to her patients and practice continuing to see patients until the very end. She played piano brilliantly, traveled extensively and was a devoted enthusiast of 20th Century modern art. She skied well enough to be selected to join the Aspen Ski Patrol, piloted an airplane, played tennis every Saturday and challenged the best players on the court.
She explored the intellectual aspects of all facets of the world and was a slave to none although she remained a confirmed and convinced Freudian. As with music, she had the same keen understanding and appreciation of art and literature. Anyone who visited a museum with her, or attended a concert, or shared in a book discussion, came away amazed at the independence, and depth and subtlety of her appreciation. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.
She is survived by two adoring sons, Alexander Gordon Barnett, and Douglas George Barnett of Chicago, two sisters, Sally Barnett and Barbara Barnett Goldfarb of New York, and an extensive network of close friends that she cultivated throughout her life. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
